Obituary of John C. Spriggs

Obituary for: John C. Spriggs John C. Spriggs, age 78, of LaBelle, Florida, died July 20, 2010, after a long battle with cancer. He was born September 21, 1931, in Quincy, Ky., to the late Charley and Nano Bradley Spriggs. John was a distinguished educator, retiring in 1994 with 30 years with the Palm Beach County School District of West Palm Beach, FL, and ten years with the Lewis County School District at Lewis County High School in Vanceburg, Ky. He was president of the Florida Education Association, the Palm Beach County Teachers Association, and the Palm Beach County Counselors Association and a director of the United States Council of Urban Education. He was appointed a member of the State of Florida Professional Practices Council, and treasurer for Lewis County Government in Vanceburg, Ky. John retired as an Assistant Personnel Director of the School District of Palm Beach County. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Eldene Kennedy Spriggs of LaBelle, Fla., two sons, Rolf (Joy) and Eric Spriggs of Quincy, Ky., one daughter Lisa (Paul) Horton of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., one grandson, Beau Bradley Horton of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., two granddaughters, Keli Horton of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Whitney Spriggs of Quincy, Ky., three sisters, Rachel Mitchell Lane of LaBelle, Fla., Mary Ginn (Bruce) Lewis of Vanceburg, Ky., and Magdalene Isaac of Quincy, Ky., four sisters-in-law, Marilyn Reedy of Clarksville, Ohio, Polly Kennedy of Cincinnati, Ohio, Judy (Tom) Christian of Columbus, Ohio, and Mary Lou Kennedy of Garrison, Ky., three brothers-in-law, Gene (Judy) Kennedy of Bella Vista, Ark., Glenn (Margaret) Kennedy of Warsaw, Ind., and Phil (Linda) Kennedy of Vanceburg, Ky., four nephews, Bill (Della) Ruggles, Craig and Mike Spriggs of Quincy, Ky., and Donald (Barbara) Isaac of New Vienna, Ohio, three nieces, Dr. Jeani Thomas of Huntington, W.V., Brenda Cerutti of Willoughby, Ohio, and Susan Ginn Noy of Vanceburg, Ky., six great-nephews, four great-nieces, and several great-great-nieces and nephews. In his passing, he was preceded by five brothers: Andrew, Carl, Charles, Joe, and Arthur Spriggs. Memorial services will be held in North Palm Beach, FL at 2:00 on August 7 at First Baptist Lake Park, 625 Park Avenue and in Quincy, KY at the Quincy Christian Church at 1:00 on September 18. A private internment will be held in Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the Boy's and Girl's Club of Lewis County, P.O. Box 158, Vanceburg, KY 41179.
