Obituary of Moye Lynwood Bishop

Moye Lynwood Bishop Clewiston, Florida March 12, 1921 - July 28, 2010 Services on: Saturday, July 31, 2010 Moye Lynwood Bishop, fifth generation Floridian, was born in Gainesville, Florida on March 12, 1921 to parents Ralph Moye & Mary Daughtry Bishop. His parents and grandfather were pioneers of the Glades area and in his early childhood he lived in Sebring and Lake Harbor. While his father started sugar farming, Moye at age 12, with the help of his mother, started an egg farm and sold eggs around the lake every day before school. During high school one of his many jobs was managing a saw mill operation in LaBelle on the current Lykes property. He graduated from Pahokee High School's class of 1941 and went to the University of FL for a short time before transferring to the Embry Riddle School of Aviation. Here he became a Master Mechanic of Aircraft. He was immediately employed by Pan American World Airways during WWII in the development of their freight efforts throughout Central and South America. He later became a manager of the Belem Air Station in Brazil and overhauled allied bombers for the war effort. After the war he came home to the Glades and worked for the family lumber yard and concrete business. On July 25, 1948 he married Marianne Jones and became a grower for US Sugar, harvesting his first crop in 1949. Moye was a grower for US Sugar until his passing. He was a member and past President of both the Lion's Club and Clewiston Chamber of Commerce, member of the Elks Club, and served on many agricultural boards and organizations. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marianne Jones Bishop; son M. Lynwood "Woody" Bishop Jr (Rosalind), West Palm Beach, FL; grandsons M. Lynwood Bishop III (Kori), Atlanta, GA and Taylor Ashmore Bishop, West Palm Beach, FL; and great-grandson Moye Lynwood Bishop IV, Atlanta, GA. He was predeceased by his daughter Elizabeth Briant Bishop. Visitation will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, July 31, 2010 with services immediately following at 2:00pm at Akin-Davis Funeral Home, Clewiston, Florida. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Hendry Regional Medical Center Foundation (544 W Sugarland Hwy, Clewiston, FL 33440) or the church of your choice.
